As of Oct. 30, 2026, Horry County Veterans Affairs in Conway helps veterans, surviving spouses and dependents file claims for VA benefits, appeal decisions and enroll in VA health care, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., per Horry County. Georgetown County and Brunswick County, North Carolina, run their own offices with similar services.

Nobody has to pay to file a claim with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Help from an accredited veterans service organization representative is “always free,” per VA.gov. North Carolina’s veterans agency puts it more bluntly: “All services are 100% free,” per the N.C. Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

What can a county veterans officer do for me?

In South Carolina, county veterans affairs officers help veterans and families file claims and, in some cases, review claims and represent them on appeals, per the S.C. Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Horry County lists claim filing, advice and representation in the VA appeals system, and help enrolling in VA medical care.

Brunswick County lists disability, burial, medical, education, survivor and property tax benefits. In North Carolina, a service officer also completes the NCDVA-9 certification that disabled veterans need for the state’s property tax exclusion.

Is there state help beyond the county office?

Yes. The nearest North Carolina state veterans service center for Brunswick County residents is in Wilmington, at 3205 Randall Parkway, Suite 102 (919-664-1065), per the N.C. Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The state’s toll-free line is 844-624-8387.

In South Carolina, the S.C. Department of Veterans’ Affairs is at 1800 St. Julian Place, Suite 305, in Columbia (803-734-0200), open weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Myrtle Beach Vet Center, 1101 Johnson Ave., Suite 201, also helps veterans navigate VA benefits and makes referrals, alongside free counseling, per VA.gov. Scheduling is 843-232-2441.

Which VA forms will I sign?

To name a service organization as your representative, you sign VA Form 21-22, per VA.gov. Accredited attorneys and claims agents use VA Form 21-22a, and they can charge fees for their services, VA says.

If you need time to gather evidence, ask about an intent to file. It sets a possible start date for benefits; you then have one year to submit the full claim, and an approved claim may pay back to that date. It covers disability compensation, pension and survivors’ Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, and you can file it online, by phone, by mail on VA Form 21-0966 or in person, per VA.gov.

What should I bring?

None of the three counties publishes a checklist, so call first. VA’s own application checklists start with your military discharge papers, such as the DD-214, per VA.gov.

Who do I call first?

Call the office in the county where you live. If you live in Brunswick County but get care at the Myrtle Beach VA Clinic, your claim still goes through Brunswick County or a North Carolina state office.
