GTA VI arrives Nov. 19: a parents’ guide for Horry, Georgetown and Brunswick families
Grand Theft Auto VI, rated M (Mature 17+) by the ESRB, launches Thursday, Nov. 19, 2026, and Grand Strand students get Thanksgiving break the following week: Horry County Schools and Georgetown County School District are off Nov. 23-27, and Brunswick County Schools in North Carolina closes Nov. 25-27. Parents can set play time, age levels and spending limits from a phone with the free PlayStation Family app or Xbox Family Settings app, ideally before preloading opens Nov. 12.
Dates are from Rockstar Games, the ESRB and each district’s 2026-27 calendar, checked Nov. 2-3, 2026.
How does the GTA VI launch line up with the school calendar?
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| Wed, Nov 11 | Veterans Day: Brunswick schools closed; Georgetown early dismissal |
| Thu, Nov 12 | GTA VI preloading opens |
| Thu, Nov 19 | GTA VI launches |

Winter break is the next long stretch: it starts Dec. 21 in Horry and Brunswick and Dec. 23 in Georgetown, and students return Jan. 4 in Horry, Jan. 6 in Brunswick and Jan. 7, 2027, in Georgetown, per the district calendars. A play-time schedule set for Thanksgiving can be adjusted for the holidays from the same app.
When does GTA VI come out, and when can it be downloaded?
Grand Theft Auto VI launches Thursday, Nov. 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to the Rockstar Games Newswire. It is not coming to PC or to older consoles at launch.
Preloading opens Thursday, Nov. 12, per the Rockstar Store. Preloading means the console downloads the game a week early, so it is ready to play the moment it unlocks on launch day.
The boxed copy sold in stores is a Code-in-Box: the box holds a download code, not a disc, per the Rockstar Store. A boxed copy under the tree still needs the full download before anyone can play.
What does the M rating on GTA VI mean?
The Entertainment Software Rating Board rates Grand Theft Auto VI M (Mature 17+), which means the ESRB considers it suitable for ages 17 and up, according to its rating page. The rating lists seven content descriptors:
- Blood and Gore
- Intense Violence
- Mature Humor
- Nudity
- Strong Language
- Strong Sexual Content
- Use of Drugs and Alcohol
The ESRB also flags In-Game Purchases, so players can spend real money inside the game. The rating is a guide for families, not a law: stores set their own policies on selling M-rated games to minors.
How do I set up parental controls on a PS5?
Sony’s free PlayStation Family app lets a parent manage a child’s account from a phone. Per PlayStation, it sets:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Age levels | Which games and apps the child can open, by age rating |
| Play time | How long the child can play each day |
| Spending limit | A monthly cap; it starts at $0 |
| Communication | Who can message the child |
On the console itself, the family manager, or a parent the manager appoints, can also set how long and during which hours a child plays, every day or on chosen days, according to PlayStation.
How do I set up Xbox Family Settings?
Microsoft’s free Xbox Family Settings app does the same job on Xbox Series X|S. Per Xbox, it covers screen time schedules, Ask to Buy for games and in-game purchases, a spending history and who the child can play with online. Ask to Buy sends the parent a request before a purchase goes through.
A practical step for both consoles: set up the child’s account and the app before Nov. 12, when preloading opens, so the controls are in place before the game is on the console.
How long will the GTA VI download take?
Rockstar had not published the download size as of Nov. 3, 2026. The console’s store shows it on the game’s page once preloading opens.
The full-speed math is simple: size in gigabytes times 8,000, divided by your speed in megabits per second, gives seconds. Every 100 gigabytes takes about 2 hours 13 minutes at 100 Mbps, and about 13 minutes at 1,000 Mbps. Real downloads are often slower, because Wi-Fi, other devices in the house and the store’s servers all take a share. A cable from the router to the console is usually steadier than Wi-Fi for a long download.
Our Gaming in Myrtle Beach page has a download calculator that uses your own speed.
