Dog- and Cat-Friendly Grand Strand: When and Where Your Dog Can Go
Coming to Myrtle Beach or the Brunswick Islands with a dog, a cat or both? Pick where you are staying and get a plan: the hours your dog can be on the beach, dog parks, hotels that take pets, the night and weekend emergency vet, and what to do in a hurricane or if your pet gets lost. Every rule comes from a city, county, state, park or business page, with the date we checked it.
Most Grand Strand beaches allow leashed dogs, but not in the middle of a summer day. From May 1 through Labor Day, dogs must stay off the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach and unincorporated Horry County, including Garden City; North Myrtle Beach bans them from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May 15. Pawleys Island and Georgetown County beaches allow leashed dogs all day, and Huntington Beach State Park welcomes leashed dogs year-round on its south beach. The emergency vet in Myrtle Beach is open overnight on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends.

Vacation rentals with pets
- Renting a condo or beach house? Use the pet filter, then confirm in writing before you pay: how many pets, weight limit, pet fee or deposit, and whether cats count.
- Condo buildings can have their own pet rules on top of the owner's: ask whether pets may use the elevator, the pool deck and the beach walkover.
- Check the beach hours for your town before you book: in summer, the dog walk is before breakfast or after 5 p.m. in most of Horry County.

Lost pet or loose dog? What to do
- Call the county animal shelter below and file a lost report. Call again every day: a pet can take a day or two to reach a shelter.
- File a free lost-pet report online too; Horry County links one from its shelter page.
- Call the nearest vet offices; people often take found pets there.
- Tell the front desk or your rental manager, and ask neighbors.
- Make sure your pet's microchip registration has your current cell phone number, and put the chip number on your lost report.
- Horry County
1923 Industrial Park Road, Conway. Monday to Friday 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The county page links a free lost-pet report on Petco Love Lost.

- Brunswick County
429 Green Swamp Road, Supply, N.C. Office Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. After-hours emergencies: 911.
Traveling with a cat
- Fewer places for cats
Hotels list cats less often than dogs: check the cat column in the hotel list. Brunswick County's hurricane shelters take dogs and cats; Horry County's public shelters take neither.
- Keep a cat inside the rental
A cat in a strange house is most likely to slip out when doors open: unload the car with the cat in a closed room, and keep it inside.
- If your cat gets out
Search close by first; scared cats usually hide nearby. Then file a lost report with the county shelter and online.
Hurricane plan for your pet
Horry County
The county's hurricane guide says pets are not allowed at public shelters, except service animals. Plan to leave early with your pet for a pet-friendly hotel or friends outside the evacuation zone, and ask your vet about boarding. Emergency Management: (843) 915-5150; sign up for CodeRED alerts.
Georgetown County
We did not find a published pet policy for Georgetown County's emergency shelters. Call the county at (843) 545-3063 before you go, and plan to evacuate early with your pet.
Brunswick County
Brunswick County's public shelters accept domestic dogs and cats (no other animals): Cedar Grove Middle School in Supply and Town Creek Middle School in Winnabow, open only during a hurricane. Bring a carrier big enough for your pet to stand and turn around, a collar with ID and the rabies tag, a leash, food, water, bowls and medicines; shelters may ask for proof of vaccines.
If you are visiting when an evacuation is ordered, leave early and take your pet with you: in Horry County, public shelters do not take pets. Pack two weeks of food and medicine, vaccination records, a crate, a leash and a recent photo of your pet. Full hurricane guide.
Local risks for your dog
- Alligators
Alligators can mistake pets for prey. Keep your dog on a short leash and away from the edge of ponds, lagoons and marshes, including on golf courses and in Huntington Beach State Park.
- Heat and hot sand
In summer, walk your dog early or late, when the beach rules allow it anyway. Test the sand or pavement with your hand before a walk, bring water and never leave a pet in a parked car.
- Leash length
Myrtle Beach and Horry County limit leashes to 7 feet, and state parks to 6 feet. Retractable leashes can run longer than that.
Before you leave home
- Rabies tag
South Carolina requires dogs, cats and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies, and the metal rabies tag must be worn on the collar or harness at all times (S.C. Code 47-5-60). Carry the certificate too: the North Myrtle Beach dog park and Brunswick County shelters may ask for it.
- Crossing into North Carolina
North Carolina requires cats, dogs and ferrets over four months old to be vaccinated against rabies (G.S. 130A-185).
