Moving here? Find your zoned school and enroll

Step 1: find your zoned school. Your home address sets it. Horry and Brunswick have an official lookup where you type your address. Georgetown doesn't post an address lookup: ask the district office which school serves your address (843-436-7000, the number on the district's 2026-27 calendar), then use its online registration.

Step 2: gather the child's birth certificate and shot records, and proof that you live in the district, since residency decides where your child enrolls. Step 3: register online or at the school, as your district's registration page explains. To ask for a different school than your zoned one, use the district's transfer process.

South Carolina (Horry and Georgetown): a child can start kindergarten if they turn 5 on or before Sept 1 of that school year, and first grade if they turn 6 by Sept 1 (S.C. Code 59-63-20). A child attends free in the district where the parent or guardian they live with resides (59-63-30). Schools need a South Carolina Certificate of Immunization; a transfer student waiting for records can get a one-time special exemption valid for 30 calendar days from enrollment (44-29-180).

North Carolina (Brunswick): kindergarten if the child turns 5 on or before Aug 31. A first-time enrollee needs a certified copy of the birth certificate (or other accepted proof of age) and an immunization certificate (G.S. 115C-364). If shots are missing on the first day, you have 30 calendar days to get them (G.S. 130A-155), and 30 calendar days to turn in the health assessment form, from an exam done no more than 12 months before entry (G.S. 130A-440).

How each school did: 2026 ratings and test results

Every public school in the three districts, from each state's official 2026 data. Horry and Georgetown show South Carolina's rating (Excellent, Good, Average, Below Average or Unsatisfactory); Brunswick shows North Carolina's test results and growth. The two states measure differently, so compare schools within the same state.

North Carolina's 2025-26 results for all students and all tested subjects together. "At grade level" is the percent of test scores at Level 3 or above; "college and career ready" is Level 4 or above. "Growth" says whether students grew as much as expected in a year (met), more (exceeded) or less (not met). Statewide, 59.2% of scores were at grade level and 37.5% college and career ready. North Carolina's A-F letter grades are not in this data file.

Parents, help keep this guide right

  • Calendar changed? If your district moves a day off or a make-up day, tell us the date and where it was announced. We check it against the district. Send it.
  • School event open to the public? Plays, fairs and fundraisers can go on our events calendar. Send it.

What readers send is checked by our editors and published as "Reader reports", apart from the official calendars. We never publish your email, and we don't publish names or photos of students.
