Moving here? Find your zoned school and enroll

Step 1: find your zoned school. Your home address sets it. Horry and Brunswick have an official lookup where you type your address. Georgetown doesn't post an address lookup: ask the district office which school serves your address (843-436-7000, the number on the district's 2026-27 calendar), then use its online registration.

Step 2: gather the child's birth certificate and shot records, and proof that you live in the district, since residency decides where your child enrolls. Step 3: register online or at the school, as your district's registration page explains. To ask for a different school than your zoned one, use the district's transfer process.

South Carolina (Horry and Georgetown): a child can start kindergarten if they turn 5 on or before Sept 1 of that school year, and first grade if they turn 6 by Sept 1 (S.C. Code 59-63-20). A child attends free in the district where the parent or guardian they live with resides (59-63-30). Schools need a South Carolina Certificate of Immunization; a transfer student waiting for records can get a one-time special exemption valid for 30 calendar days from enrollment (44-29-180).

North Carolina (Brunswick): kindergarten if the child turns 5 on or before Aug 31. A first-time enrollee needs a certified copy of the birth certificate (or other accepted proof of age) and an immunization certificate (G.S. 115C-364). If shots are missing on the first day, you have 30 calendar days to get them (G.S. 130A-155), and 30 calendar days to turn in the health assessment form, from an exam done no more than 12 months before entry (G.S. 130A-440).

G.S. 115C-364: kindergarten age and documents for first-time enrollment; N.C. G.S. 130A-155: immunization certificate, 30 days; N.C. How each school did: 2026 ratings and test results

Every public school in the three districts, from each state's official 2026 data. Horry and Georgetown show South Carolina's rating (Excellent, Good, Average, Below Average or Unsatisfactory); Brunswick shows North Carolina's test results and growth. The two states measure differently, so compare schools within the same state.

3 Excellent2 Good10 Average3 Below Average1 Unsatisfactory

South Carolina gives a separate rating for each level a school serves, so a school with grades 6-12 can have both a middle school and a high school rating. Points are the school's overall score out of 100. Each level (elementary, middle, high) has its own cut-offs for each rating, so compare points only between schools of the same level. In the 2026 statewide data, elementary report cards rated Excellent had 61 points or more and middle school ones 56 or more; high school ratings overlap more (Good ranged from 60 to 72 points, Excellent started at 67). If your child is in middle school, look at the middle school rating, even when the school also has another level.
